Looking to join us a volunteer?

Thank you for your interest in joining HIAS PA as a volunteer.  Our volunteers' support is crucial to the work we do.  Please read below about the different categories of volunteers and the steps required to become a volunteer with HIAS PA.

Social Service Volunteers

From appointment accompaniment and childcare to ESL tutoring and job mentorship, volunteers support many aspects of our general agency programming. Folks interested in volunteering in this sector must complete the following steps before volunteering.

1. Learn about our current social service opportunities!  Note that these opportunities change throughout the year according to our needs, so if there is something you'd hope to see here, we still encourage you to take the next steps.

2. Sign up for a volunteer database profile.

3. Attend a New Volunteer Information Session, offered monthly.

Pro Bono Opportunities

HIAS PA encourages professionals to use their expertise to enhance programming. Specific openings require qualifications.

  • Attorney Volunteer: We are currently recruiting folks to take on asylum cases. Those without experience are required to attend a HIAS PA asylum CLE, currently offered twice a year in June and in December.
    • HIAS PA is a PA CLE accredited provider and a participant in the PA CLE's Pro Bono Pilot Project.
  • Mental Health Volunteer (Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Clinicians)
  • Public Relations/Communications Volunteer

Fellowships and Internships

Students interested in interning with HIAS Pennsylvania's legal program or refugee resettlement team should email their most recent resume and cover letter to community@hiaspa.org. In this email, please indicate which program you'd like to intern with, what your start and end dates would be, and how many hours/which days per week you can commit.  We are at capacity through fall 2019 and can only accept interns from fall 2019 onwards.

  • We require all volunteers to be respectful and non-judgmental of all cultures and races.
  • Many opportunities include working with children, which according to Pennsylvania law requires that you complete a background check.
  • Most of our opportunities are during the work day (9am-5pm).
