Picking up the pieces after US falters in its commitment to welcoming Ukrainians fleeing Russian invasion

More than 147,000 Ukrainians have been authorized to book passage to the United States through a government sponsorship program, including thousands who have settled in Pennsylvania. According to one immigrant services nonprofit, not all those settlements have been successful.

Most of the Ukrainians who have come to the Philadelphia area are not legally designated as refugees, but they are entering through a program called Uniting for Ukraine, which expedites their arrival.

β€œIt means that Ukrainians who find sponsors β€” Americans who have sufficient income and assets to support them for two years β€” are permitted to enter the country as sponsored immigrants, as humanitarian parolees, for two years,” said immigration attorney Catherine Miller-Wilson.
