Ask Me Anything: Asylum Seekers

Monday, January 15, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Throughout the month of December, HIAS Pennsylvania shared the story of Lidia*, a single mother who fled political persecution, walked from Nicaragua to Texas with her children, was kidnapped and robbed along the way, and was abruptly sent from Texas to Philadelphia on a bus, as part of a political stunt.

Lidia is an asylum seeker – someone who is forced to flee their country and asks for protection in the United States. Although the experiences of Lidia and her children seem unimaginable, many asylum seekers face similar dangers and obstacles during their journey to the United States.

Join HIAS PA on January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, to learn about the experiences of asylum seekers and how you can help them. This virtual Ask Me Anything program will include a panel discussion  followed by a letter writing campaign supporting asylum seekers.

Panelists:

  • Matthew P. Egler DiFerdinando, Esq. | Staff Attorney, HIAS Pennsylvania
  • Nenehjoh Mansaray | Asylee Client of HIAS Pennsylvania
  • Alisa R. Gutman, MD, PhD | Medical Director, Philadelphia Human Rights Clinic | Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania
