What does it mean when borders close? In 1939, the St. Louis, a ship carrying Jewish passengers fleeing the Holocaust, was turned away from US shores – even though there was no pandemic nor any legitimate reason for doing so. Many perished after returning to Europe. While in this moment borders are closed because of a pandemic, the truth is that our borders started closing long before COVID-19 shut down the world.
During this Commemorating the St. Louis event, asylum and refugee law specialist and Temple University Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Professor Jaya Ramji-Nogales, will discuss the potential long- and short-term effects of keeping our borders closed to immigrants, and then there will be time for an audience Q&A.
