Summer 2020 Asylum CLE
Virtual
HIAS Pennsylvania and Nationalities Services Center
are pleased to present a free Virtual CLE training on Asylum Law
in partnership with Ballard Spahr, LLP
Instructors Ayodele Gansallo Esq., LLM, of HIAS PA
and Jonah Eaton Esq., of NSC
HIAS PA and NSC will provide training on basic asylum law as applied in the United States. This is a complex, yet important area of law, offering the opportunity to represent and assist those seeking humanitarian protection from persecution in their home countries. With the current focus on immigrants, the need for pro bono representation for pro se applicants has never been greater. Areas to be covered include the definition of asylum, qualification criteria and the standards of proof that apply to this form of relief. We will also touch on asylum claims based on membership in a particular social group, which in many ways offers opportunities to expand the law. The training will equip participants to handle asylum cases pro bono.
The impact of winning asylum cases is life-changing, both for the respondent and for pro bono counsel. HIAS PA and NSC also provide on-going mentoring to those who are willing to accept an asylum case.
This season’s Pro Bono Asylum CLE training will be hosted as a three part webinar series. Links for each part will be sent to all registered participants before the training date. Attorneys will receive 1 substantive CLE credit for each hour of training they attend, once they accept an asylum case.
