HIAS PA’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Advocacy and Action

Monday, January 16, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

In 1962, white segregationists in the South sent busloads of Black Americans to northern states with the false promise of jobs and houses awaiting them in their new communities. These racist “Reverse Freedom Rides of 1962” were in direct response to the Freedom Riders who were working to integrate the United States in the 1960s. Sound familiar? Today migrants are being bused to northern US cities, including Philadelphia, with similar promises and for similarly misguided reasons.

Join us this Monday, January 16th, at 10AM, for HIAS PA’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Advocacy and Action, happening virtually over Zoom.

As we remember and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy at our annual day of advocacy and action, you will learn about the migrant buses coming to Philadelphia from Texas and what our welcoming community is doing in response. The City of Philadelphia’s Office of Immigrant AffairsCasa de Venezuela, Pennsylvania Immigration & Citizenship Coalition, La Puerta Abierta, Juntos, Nationalities Service CenterNew Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, and other Philadelphia-area immigrant-serving organizations will join us and share what their organizations are doing.

Join us to learn about ways you can help and how to contact your legislators.
