Ask Me Anything: Work Authorization

Monday, April 3, 2023, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Did you miss it? Watch the recording here!

As a city, state, and country, we regularly welcome newcomers, but our immigration system doesn’t give them the tools they need for success. Immediate work authorization for asylees and new immigrants can change a family’s life and bring economic growth to our community.

Join us on Monday, April 3rd, at noon, to learn about work authorization from a business, political, and personal perspective. HIAS PA’s Executive Director, Cathryn Miller-Wilson, will be joined by Sarah Steltz, from The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia, and by a HIAS PA legal team staffer who was caught in the struggle for more than a decade.

The program will be recorded.

As The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia’s Vice President of Economic Competitiveness, Sarah Steltz provides strategic direction and leadership in support of The Chamber’s mission to enhance the Greater Philadelphia region’s overall competitiveness by attracting and expanding companies, capital, and talent in key growth sectors.

Shaloo Jose is the Director of the Asylee Outreach Program at HIAS Pennsylvania. She provides immigration legal representation to asylees so that they can move forward on their path to permanent residency, including by obtaining work authorization for them. She also works with asylees to obtain employment services and other critical resources on the path to self-sufficiency. She understands the challenge of obtaining work authorization on a very personal level, as she has lived it.
