Marissa Piña Rodriguez
Marissa Piña Rodríguez is a Know Your Rights Coordinator at HIAS Pennsylvania. She provides Know Your Rights presentations, legal screenings and referrals for unaccompanied Central American children and teenagers in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Before joining HIAS Pennsylvania, Marissa was a community organizer at the South Philly Latinx and immigrant rights organization, Juntos, where she helped lead the #EndPARS campaign which successfully forced the city of Philadelphia to no longer renew its arrest database sharing contract with ICE, thereby expanding our current Sanctuary City policy and providing crucial protections to non-citizens. She has also worked as a paralegal at an immigration law office and as an English and Writing instructor for K-12 students.
Marissa was born in Jalisco, Mexico and migrated with her family to the US in the early 1990s, settling in California. Growing up both in a border state and in a mixed status family, Marissa became an immigrant rights activist and abolitionist. The first in her family to graduate from college where she earned her B.A. in Philosophy, English, and Latin American Studies, Marissa plans on pursuing law school in the near future.
