SUMMARY:Those Who Have Been Left Behind: Defending Refugee Rights in a Time of Exclusion
DESCRIPTION:Register\n \n \n \n \n \n In recognition of World Refugee Day\, join HIAS Pennsylvania on Monday\, June 22nd\, at 12:00 PM EDT\, for a virtual program on the latest developments affecting refugees and asylees in the United States. \nCathryn Miller-Wilson\, Executive Director of HIAS PA\, and Shaloo Jose\, Managing DOJ Accredited Representative\, will discuss barriers to permanent residence for refugees and asylees seeking to apply for Green Cards\, and changes that could make it more difficult for refugees and asylees to obtain and maintain employment authorization. Those Who Have Been Left Behind: Defending Refugee Rights in a Time of Exclusion will also cover the federal government’s efforts to subject refugees and asylees\, who have already been vetted and granted protection in the United States\, to additional security vetting and review\, as well as the court challenges that have temporarily paused these efforts. The webinar will address the current administration’s recent decision to increase refugee admissions\, while reserving those slots exclusively for white South Africans. \nAs we mark World Refugee Day\, we invite advocates\, community members\, and our immigrant\, refugee\, and asylee neighbors to learn more about these developments and what they mean in the ongoing fight for justice. \nThose who wish to attend can register here. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during the program. \nThis program is the final event in HIAS Pennsylvania’s Immigrant Heritage Month series.

SUMMARY:Commemorating the MS St. Louis: Lessons Learned from the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Register\n \n \n \n \n \n				  \nJoin HIAS Pennsylvania on Friday\, June 5th at 11:30 AM for a webinar in commemoration of the MS St. Louis. This is the second event in our Immigrant Heritage Month series. \nThe MS St. Louis was a ship carrying 937 mostly Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust. The majority of them were refused entry into the United States on June 6\, 1939. As a result\, 254 of the passengers were ultimately killed by Nazis when they were forced to return to Europe. \nCommemorating the MS St. Louis: Lessons Learned from the Holocaust\, will explore the consequences of isolationist policies\, and lessons that can and should be learned from the fateful voyage of the MS St. Louis. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HIAS Pennsylvania’s Executive Director\, Cathryn Miller-Wilson\, will be joined by Jutta Weduwen\, Executive Director of the German organization\, Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP). \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ARSP was created after WWII to atone for the suffering caused by Nazi war crimes. The organization connects German volunteers with service organizations around the world. HIAS Pennsylvania has been fortunate to host many fellows from ARSP. \nThose who wish to attend the webinar can register here. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during the program.

SUMMARY:The Decline of U.S. Citizenship & Dismantling of the American Dream
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n				  \nImmigration has been the basis of our country as well as the lifeblood of its growth and success from its beginnings. All of this makes the current federal government’s violent push to keep people out\, strip people of legal status\, deport them to countries in which some of them have never lived and prevent those who have called this country home for decades completely unAmerican.  \nJoin us virtually on Wednesday\, May 13th at 12:00 PM for an eye-opening conversation in which HIAS PA’s Executive Director\, Cathryn Miller-Wilson\, and Managing DOJ Accredited Representative Lori Alexander will unpack the latest changes to the naturalization process. From expanded “neighborhood investigations” that raise serious concerns about privacy\, fairness\, and objectivity\, to growing delays in scheduling interviews and oath ceremonies that leave applicants in limbo\, new barriers are reshaping what it means to become an American. We’ll also discuss the impact of the amended citizenship test\, which has become less accessible for many\, and explore how a broader climate of anti-immigrant policies is discouraging eligible residents from even applying. Those who are already citizens are at risk too\, as the current administration attempts to end birthright citizenship and ramps up denaturalization efforts. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. Register here. \nThis program is part of a series hosted by HIAS PA that addresses the current challenges immigrants are facing and ways that you can help your immigrant neighbors.

SUMMARY:Thankful Together
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for HIAS PA’s Thankful Together Event!\n \n \n \n \n \n Please note: this year’s event will be different from previous Thankful Together events. Read below for further details. \n \n \n REGISTER\n \n \n \n \n \n Friends and family are welcome to join you at this event. Please be sure to register everyone in your party. \n \n \n \n \n \n Our Tradition: Every year HIAS PA helps our newest arrivals celebrate their first Thanksgiving by inviting them to a meal prepared and served by our volunteers. Together we break bread\, teach the newcomers about this uniquely American holiday and celebrate being together. \nThe Problem: This year\, newcomers are under attack by our own government and cannot come to celebrate this traditional holiday without exposing themselves to significant danger. So this year\, we are expressing our thanks for all of you by sharing an afternoon of information and advocacy. \nOur Solution (which depends on all of you): HIAS PA staff will share their expertiseto teach us the truth about the American Immigration system – why it is so brokenand how the current federal government is using it as a weapon to attack our community members. They will answer questions that you have about the system and\, most importantly\, share things you can do to help ensure Liberty and Justice for All! \n \n \n \n \n \n \nHelp our clients have a full Thanksgiving plate: Please bring a canned or non-perishable item to be added to boxes of food that will be delivered to clients in need.

SUMMARY:Citizenship Under Threat
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n New immigration policies have created urgent challenges for immigrants. This includes changes to the citizenship process. \nU.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is reviving neighborhood investigations of citizenship applicants\, which may include interviews with neighbors\, employers\, coworkers\, and others. This practice has not been done since 1991. USCIS has also changed the “good moral character” standard\, which previously disqualified individuals who had committed serious crimes from becoming citizens. Now\, an applicant must prove that they have had a positive influence in their community to meet this standard. Additionally\, the current administration continues to pursue efforts to end birthright citizenship\, despite the initial executive order being blocked by federal courts\, and has started a denaturalization campaign. \nThese are a few of the changes that will be addressed during HIAS Pennsylvania’s virtual program\, The State of Immigration in America: Citizenship Under Threat. This program will be held on Wednesday\, September 10\, 2025\, at 7:00 PM EDT on Zoom. HIAS PA’s Citizenship and Family Unification Program Manager\, Lori Alexander\, MSW\, and Executive Director\, Cathryn Miller-Wilson\, Esq.\, will discuss these policies and ways that community members can help local immigrants. \nThe State of Immigration in America is a series of programs with members of HIAS PA’s staff. The programs address the current challenges that immigrants are facing and what you can do to help your immigrant neighbors.

SUMMARY:Asylum in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n Since Inauguration Day\, the right to claim asylum in the United States has been under attack by the current administration. The federal government has increased the arrest and detention of asylum applicants\, including those here in Pennsylvania. Procedures allowing rapid deportation without judicial review have been expanded. \nThese are just a few of the changes that HIAS Pennsylvania’s Asylum & Removal Defense Program Manager\, Christopher Setz-Kelly\, Esq.\, and Executive Director\, Cathryn Miller-Wilson\, will discuss during HIAS Pennsylvania’s virtual program\, The State of Immigration in America: Asylum in Crisis. This program will be held via Zoom on Wednesday\, July 30\, 2025 at 7:00 PM EDT and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. \nThe State of Immigration in America is a series of monthly programs with members of HIAS PA’s staff. SUMMARY:How Anti-Immigrant Policies Hurt Children
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n \n \n \n \n \n The new administration’s hostile immigration policies have affected immigrants of all ages. These changes have a particular impact on immigrant youth. \nIn undocumented and mixed-status families\, children are experiencing high anxiety and stress\, wondering if their parents will be detained or deported. In some instances\, immigrant youth have been detained and deported. Additionally\, no new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applications are being accepted\, there is a backlog of green card applications for children who have experienced abuse and neglect\, and Office of Refugee Resettlement funding cuts have left unaccompanied children to navigate the complex immigration system without a lawyer. \nSome families are no longer sending their children to school because of the fear that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will show up. Stricter immigration enforcement policies have put added pressure on teachers and school staff\, who must now learn how to navigate new and sometimes unclear guidelines on how to handle immigration-related concerns and ICE visits at school. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, May 6th\, at 7:00 PM on Zoom\, for an important update about these issues. Stephanie Lubert\, Esquire Program Manager of HIAS PA’s Immigrant Youth Advocacy Program\, will talk about the impact of new immigration policies on immigrant children and what you can do to support immigrant families in your community. \nThis update is part of a series of monthly programs with members of HIAS PA’s staff. The programs will address the current challenges that immigrants are facing due to ongoing policy changes and what you can do to help.
