Opening Doors for New Americans since 1882
Charlie Heil is an ESL Instructor at HIAS PA, working primarily with preliterate and beginner-level refugee, asylee and immigrant adults and youth. He is a graduate of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with an MA (Hons) in English-Art History. Charlie’s first experience as a teacher happened in 2002, when he moved to Barcelona to attend an ESOL training course and wound up spending two years teaching at a military base in León, Spain. Since then, his career in education has taken him to New York, Miami and London, where he has served as a teacher, academic manager and college principal. Upon returning to Philadelphia, he started volunteering at HIAS PA in 2016, and this eventually led to a full-time position with the agency. When not preparing lessons and assigning homework, Charlie acts in plays, make short films and wanders around Eastern State Penitentiary dressed as a ghoul during Halloween season.
