Unaccompanied Minor Pro Bono Training on September 30, 2014

 

HIAS Pennsylvania, together with the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association Pro Bono Committee and La Comunidad Hispana,conducted a training for immigration and family law attorneys interested in representing unaccompanied minors on September 30th, 2014. Interested in helping a research project?

Drexel University is seeking participants to take part in a research study involving political asylum and trauma.

Asylee Outreach Program Coordinator Jason Hernandez is working with Sarah Filone at Drexel University to research asylum applications in an attempt to create a more fair system moving forward. They are interested in the ways adult asylees communicate their stories in an interview.

Derivative asylees are welcome to participate.

Bar Reporter Highlights Asylum Case

The Jewish community has serious concerns about the “Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement” (SAFE) Act, H.R. 2278, which was approved by the House Judiciary Committee in June 2013.

Jewish Exponent Considers Immigration Reform

 

As the Senate went through its final consideration stages over the comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) bill last week - before passing the bill to move on to the house - HIAS Pennsylvania and partner agencies including the Jewish Community Relations Council worked hard to get on-the-fence Pennsylvania Senator Toomey to vote for the bill. Our hard work was recognized by the Jewish Exponent, who published two articles about the bill:

Urge Your Representative to Reauthorize the Lautenberg Amendment

The Lautenberg Amendment, which helps persecuted religious minorities fleeing Iran and the former Soviet Union, expired on June 1, 2011. The provision must be renewed each year. A failure to reauthorize the Amendment would make it difficult for the U.S. to protect Christian, Jewish, Baha’i, and other religious minorities fleeing Iran and could end family reunification for Jews and Evangelicals in the Former Soviet Union with relatives in the U.S.
