Client Interviewer

Program: Legal Services

Minimum Time Requirements: 12 hours per week, six (6) months per year

Brief Description: Interview clients, either on the phone or in person, to assess their immigration legal claims, provide legal information and make appropriate referrals.

Will travel be required? No.

Are there language needs? Fluency in Spanish required.

Will training be provided? Training and supervision will be provided by managing attorney, Philippe Weisz.

Citizenship Intake and Filing

Program: Legal Services

Minimum Time Requirements: None

Brief Description: To assess if clients are eligible to file for citizenship and complete application. Provide legal information and make appropriate referrals.

Will travel be required? Yes (within Philadelphia)

Are there language needs? No

Will training be provided? Yes, Training and supervision will be provided by HIAS legal team

Minimum educational/degree requirements: J.D. or current law students

Pro Bono Representation

Program: Legal Services

Minimum Time Requirements: As needed to complete representation in a timely manner.

Brief Description: Pro bono representation of immigration legal services. Possible fields of practice: asylum, domestic and interpersonal violence, victims of torture, removal proceedings, citizenship, unaccompanied minors, family law.

Will travel be required? Yes. Clients will be asked to meet at the attorney's office, but local travel to courts may be required.

Are there language needs? Interpretation may be required, can be facilitated by HIAS Pennsylvania when necessary.

Will training be provided? We have an on-going need for both experienced attorneys, who do not need training, and attorneys who may not be experienced with a particular substantive area of need who are able to attend trainings that we provide. We are currently seeking experienced family law and immigration attorneys who are willing to take a Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) case pro bono and will be offering a training for both family law and immigration attorneys in late September, 2014.

Pro Bono Attorney Coordinator and Family Liaison

Program: Legal Services

Minimum Time Requirements: 14 hours per week, six (6) months per year.

Brief Description: Assist youth team legal staff with coordinating referrals to pro bono attorneys, communicating with relatives of children once the children and relatives have been reunited, providing intake at immigrant youth detention facilities and providing some case management assistance to these families.

Will travel be required? Yes. The position requires travel to Central and Northern Pennsylvania to meet with clients. Access and ability to drive a car is not required but preferred.

Are there language needs? Fluency in Spanish required.

Will training be provided? Yes, training and supervision will be provided by HIAS Pennsylvania social work staff.

Minimum educational/degree requirements: Bachelor’s in Social Work. 

All volunteers must have PA Criminal Record, Child Abuse Clearances, and FBI Criminal Background checks completed before starting ($28 total).
