Minimum Time Requirements: 8-10 hours per month, three (3) months per year.
Brief Description: Each volunteer will be paired with a refugee family who is in need of support. After an initial meeting to introduce the volunteer and family to one another, the volunteer will independently meet with the family on a regular basis and at times that are mutually convenient. Typical activities during visits with a refugee family could include, helping them read the mail and identify important items, teaching basic English, reading to the children, taking trips to the market, helping make a phone call to set up a medical appointment, exploring the neighborhood and services like the local library, or going on a trip to see a museum, Penns’ Landing, etc.
Will travel be required? Yes. This position requires travel within the city of Philadelphia, primarily South and Northeast Philadelphia. Access to a car not required but must be comfortable using SEPTA bus routes to get to locations throughout the City.
Are there language needs? No.
Will training be provided? Yes, a three-hour volunteer orientation will be provided.
All volunteers must have PA Criminal Record, Child Abuse Clearances, and FBI Criminal Background checks completed before starting ($28 total).
