Job Title:​ High School Summer Mentor Coordinator

Supervisor:​ Refugee Education Coordinator

Time Commitment: ​Mentoring sessions will operate from 12:30pm-1:30pm Monday-Wednesday during the month of July 2018. Anticipated time commitment is 48 hours during the month of July, which includes a total of 12 hours of direct classroom facilitation plus 36 hours for planning and administrative tasks. Additionally, there will be 2 required pre-program planning meetings. If budget allows for additional student activities such as a field trip, the coordinator will participate in these activities as well.

General Description:​ The High School Summer Mentor Coordinator will be responsible for planning and facilitating a mentoring program for English Language Learner (ELL) immigrant and refugee students who have been in the United States for 5 years or less and are rising 9th-12th graders. The overall goal of the mentoring program is to strengthen students’ social-emotional skills plus post-high school planning. Summary of Responsibilities The High School Summer Mentor Coordinator will plan and facilitate a mentoring curriculum for immigrant and refugee youth learners in sites located in the Northeast region of Philadelphia. 

The Coordinator will:

  • Collaborate with the Refugee Education Coordinator to design the mentoring curriculum. Modify plans according to student level and need.
  • Prepare daily mentoring session plans and organize supplies as needed.
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteer mentors. Make appropriate mentor pairings and monitor student progress.
  • Oversee student training on Naviance, the School District’s college access system.
  • Manage student behavior.
  • Conduct all services in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Adhere to all HIAS PA agency policies.

Qualifications:

  • Some college required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in a mentoring role required.
  • Experience working with high school students required.
  • Cultural sensitivity and openness working with different values and beliefs.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently or within a team with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries as required and appropriate.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making practices.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Northeast Philadelphia.
  • Current (within one year) PA Criminal Background check, PA Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprint Check.
