Job Title:​ High School Summer Math Program Instructor

Supervisor:​ Refugee Education Coordinator

Time Commitment: ​Classes will operate from 8:30am-12:30pm Monday-Wednesday during the month of July 2018. Anticipated time commitment is 20 hours per week, which includes 10.5 hours of instruction and time for lesson preparation and classroom setup/clean up. Additionally, there will be 2 required pre-program planning meetings. If budget allows for additional student activities such as a field trip, the instructor will participate in these activities as well.

General Description:​ The High School Summer Math Program Instructor will be responsible for implementing Math classes composed of English Language Learner (ELL) immigrant and refugee students who have been in the United States for 5 years or less and are rising 9th-12th graders. The overall goal of the math activities is to strengthen students’ foundational skills in computation and critical thinking. Specifically, students will:

  • Gain grade-level fluency and efficiency in basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Be able to identify and use key math vocabulary to describe number relationships and math concepts both orally and in writing.
  • Practice applying their knowledge to word problems and concepts such as algebra and geometry.
  • Gain confidence in their mathematical abilities through engaging and interactive activities.

Summary of Responsibilities

The High School Summer Math Program Instructor will provide group/class instruction to immigrant and refugee youth learners in sites located in the Northeast region of Philadelphia.

The Instructor will:

  • Collaborate with the Refugee Education Coordinator and the High School Summer ESOL Program Instructor in designing the math program curriculum.
  • Prepare daily lesson plans and materials and organize classroom supplies.
  • Modify instruction according to students’ English language proficiency and mathematics proficiency.
  • Assess goals for ELL youth in the program and manage instruction to meet these goals.
  • Manage student behavior.
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers assigned to the classroom.
  • Maintain attendance sheets.
  • Conduct all services in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Adhere to all HIAS PA agency policies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Significant experience in teaching Math to high school school students required.
  • Experience teaching ELLs. TEFL/TESOL certification or TESOL master’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Current (within one year) PA Criminal Background check, PA Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprint Check.
  • Cultural sensitivity and openness working with different values and beliefs.
  • Ability to work independently or within a team with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries as required and appropriate.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making practices.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Northeast Philadelphia.
