·        Asylum

·        Other forms of relief commonly pursued by children

·        Practice issues including working with children and victims of trauma and representation of both minors and caregivers

The recent unprecedented surge in migration of unaccompanied children to the United States has created an urgent need for pro bono legal assistance in Philadelphia. These children – hundreds of whom have been released from federal custody to the care of relatives in Pennsylvania – have often fled mass violence, parental abuse or neglect, or other severe hardships and trekked thousands of miles to seek safety and protection in the United States. All are required to appear in Immigration Court and face forcible return through deportation unless granted relief. The difference a pro bono attorney can make is clear: while nine out of ten unrepresented children are ordered deported, most of those who have attorneys are ultimately permitted to stay. We invite you to take part in the effort to ensure no child faces deportation alone and that all may access the protections afforded them under our immigration laws.

Please note that recent amendments to Pennsylvania’s child abuse reporting law (23 Pa.C.S. Sec. 6344) require agencies working with children to conduct background checks on volunteers. All volunteers must complete clearances via Child Abuse History Clearance Forms before volunteering. Volunteers may attend the training before completing the clearances and submit completed clearances to HIAS PA following the training.

*All attorneys who attend are expected to take a case pro bono.
