Opening Doors for New Americans since 1882
Everyone is saying that it’s the dawn of a new era. Immigration Reform and the World-Wide Refugee Crisis were major issues in this election and, now that the voting is over, a new administration will move forward with their agenda on these and other issues. We too will move forward and for us, too, the moment is historic.
After all, we provide information, advice and legal representation services to more than 2,500 immigrants every year. And we welcome, resettle and help integrate more than 200 refugees every year. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we continue this work. Today is the anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night of destruction and terror rooted in hatred, but it is also the anniversary of the day that passengers on the Mayflower spotted land and readied themselves to begin the experiment that became our immigrant nation. So, November 9th is a date of despair but also a date of hope. How will history look on this date in 2016?
In his acceptance speech, President-Elect Trump used healing words and offered a uniting message for our country. We are grateful for the olive branch and in return extend our own: there is no better way to make America great “again” than to ensure that the democratic principles of the rule of law, freedom of religion, freedom of association, freedom of speech and due process of law are enforced. And there is no better way to make America great “again” than to ensure that the safety that is provided by our rule of law and our freedoms is available to today’s refugees, just as it was to this country’s original refugees and has continued to be with every wave of refugees since.
HIAS Pennsylvania invites you - the voters and non-voters, the winning politicians and those that won’t be going to Washington or Harrisburg – to join us in our mission. Join us, as we move forward in this new era. Stand with us as we re-double our efforts to ensure that our democratic values continue to shine their light on the world. We will continue our work and look forward to sharing it with you.
