Opening Doors for New Americans since 1882
Hansi Lo Wang, who was a Philadelphia Fellow at HIAS Pennsylvania in 2009-2010 is now a reporter for NPR. This past Saturday, on July 4th, he texted our Executive Director, Judi Bernstein-Baker telling her to turn on the radio for a big surprise.
Always obedient to our HIAS PA alumnae network, Judi did as she was told and was delighted to hear the story of Hansi’s mother, a refugee whose family's harrowing journey included two escapes: one from China and one from Vietnam. She was re-settled in Pennsylvania and her first few months were spent at Indiantown Gap in a refugee camp on a military base there. At the end of June Hansi’s mother was invited to a 40th reunion at the camp. It was the first time that she had returned after leaving there for Philadelphia 40 years ago. You can listen to the full story, as told by Hansi, here.
