Dear Friends:       Seven years ago we were honored when Ruth Messinger, head of Jewish World Service, gave our keynote address at the HIAS Pennsylvania annual luncheon. She spoke about ethnic cleansing in Dafur, an area of Sudan. Most of us were puzzled; we were unaware of the situation. Today, it would be difficult to find someone in the Jewish or faith community who is not aware of Dafur. And as 2012 approaches, HIAS Pennsylvania will be resettling Dafurian refugees referred to us by our colleagues at national HIAS....

"Part of  the criteria for this award is 'service to the law school,' which of course she has done by training and mentoring our students, as well as coming back and talking on various career panels. It is really gratifying to see someone like her getting such an award, as opposed to someone who has simply donated a lot of money for the law school. There is service, and then there is our kind of service!", writes Eve Biskind Klothen, Assistant Dean for Pro Bono and Public Interest Programs, Rutgers School of Law- Camden.
Judi Bernstein-Baker Honored for Asylum Work with Indonesian Students

Judi Bernstein-Baker was honored on Nov. 17, 2011, by the Independence Charter School of Philadelphia, which awarded her the Global Citizen award for her work with two of its students and their parents to gain asylum from Indonesia. With Judi’s encouragement, the fifth-graders of Independence Charter collected 2,500 signatures and sent hundreds of letters in an effort to stop their classmates’ deportation. Although the asylum case was not successful, the family was able to relocate to Canada.
HIAS Pennsylvania Joins Advocates in Harrisburg

Pennsylvania is at a crossroads as it confronts bills that seek to drive immigrants out of the state. Though the bills are directed at undocumented immigrants, they affect all immigrants, their families, their employers, and service providers. On Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, Judi Bernstein-Baker joined with interfatith groups and others to attend a press conference and hearings held by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives State Government Committee.

August, 2011 Judi Bernstein Baker is the recipient of the Edward Weisband Distringuished Alumni Award for Public Service or Contributions for Public Affairs, which recognizes one graduate each year whose life, work, career and contributions exmplify the highest standards of public service and deepest dedication to public affairs and sustenance of the common good at home and abroad.
